Council Square, in Spanish “Plaza del Ayuntamiento”, is the main plaza in the center of Valencia. It was built on the gardens of an old monastery and has suffered many changes up until the beginning of the 20th Century.
The Lonja is an emblematic building of the city and one of the most famous civil gothic monuments in Europe. It was declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in July 1931 and was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1996.
The Cathedral was built on the site of an earlier mosque, and was begun in the 13th century, with several changes and additions before it was finished in the 17th century. It combines several architectural styles, although Gothic is clearly predominant.
Even today, many Valencians think that this square is the center of the Carmen neighborhood, without knowing that said square is actually a few meters away, next to the Church of the Carmen itself. And the Plaza del Tossal has become the nerve center of the neighborhood, a place for bars, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues and a point of reference in Ciutat Vella.
